De.bees Music Bar – Gig Thursday 2 March 2006

Hours before the ‘Ded Hot Chilli Peppers’ take to the stage, there is already a crowd gathered, anticipating another storming performance from them. It seems this funk tribute have been fondly remembered by debees punters since their gig last summer. It is not hard to understand why they are so popular. The Ded Hots are four terrific showmen, who throw a tremendous amount of style and energy into a set that is comprised of all the Chillis Greatest Hits.

The band is spot on in terms of musicality (with their lead guitarist Chris being their stand out instrumentalist), yet it is their stage presence that truly causes them to shine. Their bassist, Pete, with his Mohican haircut and skeleton costume recreates the manic presence and of Flea. Their singer also matches the smooth Californian tone of Anthony’s voice, though he struggles with the pace of the fast tongue-twisting rap numbers. He may not be as slick and versatile a singer as Kiedis, but he imitates his physical and charismatic performance to near-perfection. Ripping off his shirt early on in the set to reveal a lean muscular torso covered with tattoos, he is an instant hit with the ladies in the crowd. Throughout the show he hurls himself about the stage, thrashing and hollering, occasionally pausing to sway in the calm of softer Chillis tunes such as ‘Scar Tissue’.

The stand out songs of the night are the infectious ‘Aeroplane’ and ‘Suck my Kiss’ and their encores ‘Under the Bridge’ and ‘Give it Away Now’, which the singer performs standing upon a table with the crowd pumping their arms in the air around him. These guys have got to be the best of UK Chilli tributes and whether you are a fan or not, they offer great high-energy entertainment.
